Acclaimed UNLV composer-in-residence, Virko Baley, premieres his opera "Holodomor: Red Earth. Hunger" set during the great famine in Ukraine, initiated by Stalin's Collectivization in 1932-33.
The work features tenor John Duykers and soprano Laura Bohn, along with baritone Tod Fitzpatrick and mezzo-soprano Stephanie Weiss. Music is by Baley, with libretto by Bohdan Boychuk.
Following its Las Vegas premier, it moves to New York City for that city's premiere Feb. 5.
Holodomor is an original surrealist tale of terror, seduction, tragic absurdity, and redemption. At the height of the genocidal Terror Famine, brutally introduced by Stalin, three starving strangers - a woman, her infant, and an embittered man - meet at a lonely crossroad. An unlikely relationship grows.
Admission is free to this performance.
