The University of Nevada, Las Vegas is pleased to host the Language and History Symposium, with the Nevada Department of Education, the Moapa Band of Paiutes, and in collaboration with the Clark County School District.
The three main tribal groups indigenous to Nevada are the Paiute (Southern and Northern), Washoe and Western Shoshone; of these tribes, there 27 sovereign bands and reservations. American Indian and Alaska Native communities maintain traditional laws and customs that are observed by their members and define their indigenous autonomy. Since time immemorial, these traditional knowledge systems have defined the rights and interests associated with Native American tribes, and justify the priority placed on maintaining individual tribal knowledge systems. This symposium represents the first of many tribal/state initiatives taking place in Southern Nevada at UNLV to support the vitality of Nevada indigenous cultures.
This event facilitates a unique cultural forum where tribal communities can collaboratively engage with Nevada institutions of higher education to identify strategies for specific outcomes by merging aspects of culture, language and tribal history as parallel incentives for success in higher education.
