How EU Membership Can Undermine Rule of Law

When: Jan. 27, 2014, 7:30pm - 8:30pm
Campus Location: Marjorie Barrick Museum / Harry Reid Center
Office/Remote Location: Auditorium

Please join the College of Liberal Arts for the University Forum Lecture " How European Union Membership Can Undermine the Rule of Law in Emerging Democracies," a talk by Jon Slapin, associate professor of political science, University of Houston

Through strict membership conditions, the EU forces new member states to undergo costly and difficult reforms designed to ensure the rule of law in the new members. Dr. Slapin contends that, under certain conditions, these reforms could undermine the rule of law in transitional democracies. Dr. Slapin’s argument has serious implications for democratic powers’ efforts to encourage democratization in countries undergoing complex social, economic and political transitions.
