The Department of Teaching and Learning presents a talk by Jason Irizarry about his book, "The Latinization of U.S. Schools: Successful Teaching and Learning in Shifting Cultural Context."
The book, was just awarded the 2012 Philip C. Chinn Multicultural Book Award through the National Association for Multicultural Education, details his work teaching a graduate-level action research course to high school students at a high-minority, low-income public school.
As a part of the course, the students undertook an action research project within the high school "with" their teachers, specifically regarding their teachers' attitudes toward them, as Latina/Latino students, and toward their families. Parts of the book are co-authored with many of the high school students, some of whom are now undergraduate students in Irizarry's teacher education department at the University of Connecticut. This dovetails with Irizarry's other key research interest in "home-growing" teachers of color.
