Charlie Barnao of the University “Magna Græcia” of Catanzaro, Italy is giving a presentation titled Survival Strategies on the Street: Homeless Gangs’ Social Structures, Cultures, and “Shadow Work.” Based on almost 15 years of ethnography in Trento (Italy), Cali and Bogotà (Colombia), this presentation discusses homeless gangs’ social structures, cultures, “shadow work,” and other everyday practices that enable them to survive in the streets. Challenging many misconceptions, it suggests that “street society” is complex, organized, clearly separated from mainstream society, and providing a cultural framework that guides homeless people’s survival strategies.
This event is free and open to the public.
