"Carol Kimball's 'Guide' is much more than a text or reference book. She has mastered a vast subject and with her elegant and personal style, she introduces all of the significant song composers and a representative selection from his or her works. Professional musicians, students and teachers will all find this volume essential to their work and it will also be a valuable companion for concertgoers."

Let me sing my praises for Carol Kimball's much-needed contribution to the study of song repertoire! While broad in scope, it efficiently meets the outlines of the survey course in the classroom as no other book on international song has to date. Yet this treasure chest of titles, valuable background information and references will serve many an individual singer, teacher, coach or pianist as well. It is sure to be a staple in every library. Finally, a book on song literature and style that is complete, savvy, and useful!"

Interpreting the Songs of Jacques Leguerney: A Guide for Study and Performance

Jacques Leguerney, heir to the exquisite French mélodie tradition, is beautifully served in this carefully researched and practical performance guide. The Leguerney mélodies are gratifying vehicles for both singers and pianists. They reflect the nature of the man himself: elegance, grace, sophistication, and an awareness of beauty in all its forms. This study leads the way to establishing internal recognition for a composer who so richly deserves it.

Richard Miller, Wheeler Professor of Performance and Director of the Vocal Arts Center, Oberlin Conservatory

Just when we thought there wasn’t a major composer left to explore, the trio of Dibbern, Kimball and Choukroun have written this invaluable, much-needed study of the songs of Jacques Leguerney. Nothing is left out and all is treated with precision and detail. My hat is off to these remarkable scholars and performers who have provided us with a wealth of information that is a must in every serious art-song enthusiast’s library. Chapeau!

Thomas Grubb, the Juilliard School, Peabody Conservatory of Music;
Houston Grand Opera, New York City Opera; author of Singing in French
