WHAT IS CHEFS FOR KIDS?

Chefs for Kids, Inc. is a nonprofit initiative of the Fraternity of Executive Chefs of Las Vegas . The goal of the program is to eliminate malnutrition and hunger through education and awareness. Presently, nine schools take part in the intensive in-school nutrition program.  From 70% to 96% of students in these schools qualify for the free and reduced meal programs. The Chefs of Las Vegas recognize the needs of these children, and have chosen to answer these needs through education.

With the help of nutritionists from the University of Nevada, Cooperative Extension , the Chefs for Kids Program was developed to teach first and second grade students about the origin, use, and need for food. Students also learn about healthy food combinations and choosing foods that provide the greatest benefit to their bodies. In eleven years, the program has served over 10,500 children.  During the 2003-2004 school year the program should reach every first grade student in the Clark County School District through the use of an instructional video curriculum.

The chefs and food purveyors visit the schools each year to promote healthy eating habits. They prepare a special breakfast once a month at one of the nine participating elementary schools that receive the program, strengthening the concept of eating breakfast.

In addition to volunteering their time to the program, the chefs also work to raise funds that help support the program.  The chefs support this program through their annual Chefs for Kids Dinner .

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

The Chefs for Kids Committee is looking for new friends to help the children of Clark County. Your organization could pledge cash or "per product" rebates for quality goods used in the Las Vegas market. This tax-deductible donation would then be contributed to Chefs for Kids, Inc. for the continuation of this exciting program.

Your contributions will not go unnoticed. Chefs for Kids, Inc. will recognize every organization participating in the donation program. You will be recognized in the Mise en Place , the Fraternity's  newsletter to all members, and in the annual Chefs for Kids Dinner and Auction program that is distributed to some of Las Vegas’ most prestigious community members. Your donations are tax deductible. Most importantly, you will become a partner in a program that can change a child's life forever!

During the 2003-2004 school year the Chefs for Kids program has increased the number of schools that they support.  In the past, the chefs only worked with four schools a year, but they now are working with nine schools a year.  The Chefs also used money to fund a video curriculum that was produced by Channel 10 locally.  The video curriculum, entitled "Adventures with Chefs for Kids", has been distributed to local elementary schools so that teachers can incorporate the video and lessons into their teaching.

As of the start of the 2003-2004 school year we have expanded our snack program to include all nine schools that we do the monthly breakfast at.  The chefs deliver a snack for each student in the nine schools once a month as part of the snack program.  They are doing this to help increase awareness of the need for the students to have some type of snack on a daily basis and to help the students concentrate on school.
