Web Management Sub-Committee Working Document

Section 1- Who we are:

Section 2- Directive:
To recommend, interpret and enforce policies, oversee major projects related to the web, engage in short and long-term planning, and represent web-related issues in other campus committees.
Section 3- Committee Charge:
1.
Develop, maintain and interpret web-related policies. Suggestions:
Priority 1:
Usability: use market research to address usability of UNLV Websites, and perform usability testing; create a general repository for usability testing information, and a general repository that will enable internal sharing of expertise
Priority 2:
Create a policy for common naming standards for UNLV URL's (TABLED) Please see Domain Name Policy (Word Document)
Priority 3.b:
Create a policy for updating faculty Web pages; examine how updating faculty Web pages may be accomplished with Web content management systems and/or applications
Priority 6:
Produce a policy on browser standards across the university (all browsers must be HTML 4.0 compliant) (low hanging fruit)

Complete a needs assessment for web and web-related resources and develop recommendations for acquiring the resources for short and long-term needs. Suggestions:
Priority 7:
Develop style guide for the Web
Priority 5:
Examine the possibility of creating Web page templates, and make those templates available to anyone authoring university Websites
Priority 3.a:
Discuss content management software; also determine a method for faculty to create and update Web pages

Develop strategies for utilizing the web and related resources to assist in meeting the university's strategic goals. Suggestions:

E-commerce

Create an Intranet

Work with the ITCC and it's affiliated committees to coordinate major information technology projects that include substantial web-based component.
5.
Develop and deploy communication mechanisms regarding the group's activities that: (a) Ensure representation of the appropriate campus constituents.(b) Provide information regarding the activities of the group to the appropriate campus constituents.

Section 6 - Other Suggestions (these suggestions may fall out of the scope of the subcommittee)

  • Priority 9: Examine using RSS feeds to alleviate UNLV e-mail spam and create "e-communities"
  • Priority 10: Examine how the portal will interface with the existing Website
  • Priority 11: Create UNLV community Web logs
  • Priority 12: Bring together the various departments that are creating Websites to discuss policies and standards
