Multicultural courses examine cultural similarities and differences
in the United States based upon two or more attributes (e.g. ethnicity,
race, gender, age, religion, sexual orientation and disabilities).
The primary purpose of International courses is to examine attributes
(e.g. current language, institutions, and culture) of existing peoples and
societies outside of the United States.
Procedure for submitting existing courses to the GEC
See "Procedure for Submitting
Courses for Consideration to Meet Core Requirements" for details on the
submission process. You are asked to contact your college representative
-- he or she will be the advocate for your class during the committee meeting,
and should be knowledgeable of the content/scope/objectives of the course,
and how it meets the requirement. For a list of committee members (along
with college affiliation) click
here.
How long will it take the GEC to make a decision?
It could take from two to three months from start to finish. The chair
requires two weeks notice before your course is brought to the committee.
After the information is given to the committee (at the next monthly
meeting), the members need time to get feedback from their particular college.
It will then be voted on no later than the next GEC meeting. You
will be notified of the status of your request within two weeks once a decision
is made.
What happens if my course is approved?
If the content is deemed acceptable as meeting the core requirements, the
course will be appended to the approved list of
courses (Click here
for lists) within thirty calendar days, and will be effective the semester
following acceptance.
