Make sure your course satisfies the learning outcomes before you
submit
For detailed information on learning outcomes, see the "Learning Outcomes
of the General Education Core Curriculum" in the current catalog.
Procedure for submitting existing courses to the GEC
The GEC will only consider courses that currently exist in the catalog (or
have been approved by the curriculum committee). New courses (or changes
to existing courses) are required to FIRST go through the
UNLV Curriculum
Committee. Begin the process by looking at the
"Procedure for Submitting Courses
for Consideration to Meet Core Requirements". Your submission must
contain all elements requested, or it will be returned.
What is a common course syllabus?
The following elements should be included on the syllabus for all
sections of the course considered: Catalog description, detailed
and descriptive topical outline, list of learning outcomes. These elements
allow the committee to clearly evaluate the quantity and quality of the content,
and ensure consistency across multiple sections.
How long will it take the GEC to make a decision?
Petitioning the GEC is the first step in a long process for sumbitting a
change/addition to the General Education Core. The chair requires two
weeks notice before your course is brought to the committee. After
the information is given to the committee (at the next monthly meeting),
the members need time to get feedback from their particular college. It
will then be voted on no later than the next GEC meeting. Any decisions
regarding the core (other than multicultural/international courses) must
be forwarded to the Faculty Senate Committee for ultimate authority. You
will be notified of the status of your request within two weeks once a decision
is made and forwarded to the Faculty Senate Committee.
