Student Speaker – Application and Selection Process
Both an undergraduate and graduate/professional student speaker are selected each semester to address the graduating class at commencement. The speakers, who are selected through a competition held each semester, must be members of the graduating class they plan to address.
Those who wish to be considered for such a role must complete the "Student Commencement Speaker" application form. Forms for both undergraduates and graduate/professional students may be downloaded by choosing the link below:
In addition to the completed application form, each prospective speaker must also submit a copy of his or her three-minute proposed speech.
Students may self-nominate or be nominated by their College Dean or faculty member.
The deadline for submitting the Spring 2015 Commencement application and materials is Monday, April 13, 2015 by 11:59 p.m. Please email the complete nomination packet (in either Word or PDF format) to Kyle Kaalberg, Office of the President.
The Commencement Student Speaker Selection Committee will review the applications, interview top candidates, and make recommendations to the President's Cabinet, which will then make the final selection. Selection will be based on the speech presented, civic engagement, scholarly achievements, and awards.
Those selected to present at graduation will be assigned a faculty member to continue to revise and refine their speech and presentation.
For more information on the process, please contact Kyle Kaalberg at 895-3201.
