Stephen Bates, Assistant Professor
(J.D, 1987, Harvard Law School)
Stephen Bates teaches forms of journalistic writing and communication law. He received his J.D. cum laude degree from Harvard Law School and a B.A. magna cum laude degree from Harvard College. Prior to joining the School, he was literary editor for Wilson Quarterly. His Secularization and Its Discontents is under contract with Yale University Press. Bates has also published four other books focusing on political advertising; media and congress; anecdotes of American journalism; and public schools and the religious right. His 1995 monograph on the Hutchins Commission was written when he was an Annenberg Senior Fellow. He has taught at John Hopkins University and been a guest lecturer at Harvard College, MIT, New York University and Northwestern University. |

Greg
Borchard, Associate
Professor, Graduate Coordinator
(Ph.D., 2003, University of Florida)
Dr. Borchard is Graduate Coordinator in the Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media Studies. He teaches writing for mass media, journalism history, and communications historiography. He received a M.A. in mass communication (1999) and a B.A. in history (1995) from the University of Minnesota. As a journalist, he wrote for newspapers including The Gainesville Sun, The Minnesota Daily, and The Lakeshore Weekly. His academic research has focused on Whig newspapers of the nineteenth century and antebellum partisanship. His work has been published in American Journalism and Journalism History. He has also contributed articles to encyclopedias on American journalism and law, and reviewed articles and books for media-related publications. |

| Kathy Espin, Assistant Professor
(M.A., University of Nevada, Las Vegas)
Kathy Espin teaches introduction to public relations and public relations writing. She earned her M.A. in Communication from UNLV and a B.S in Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She was recognized at UNLV for Outstanding Teaching by a Part Time Faculty in 2003. She served as Interim Basic Course Director for Communication Studies for the 2005-2006 term. She started her professional career as a journalist with the Las Vegas SUN where she was copy editor and city editor from 1980 to 1985. She spent 12 years in public relations, advertising and marketing in the casino industry before forming her own communication consulting firm in 1996. She currently writes about Las Vegas for several publications including TravelAge West, Nevada Magazine, Los Angeles Times Calendar and several custom publications. As a volunteer, she serves as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for children in foster care.

Dr. Ferri has been at UNLV since 1985. His recent works in health communication and media careers are published in refereed journals including, Medien & Kommunkations-wissenschaft, Oncology Issues, Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media and Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly. His current research in film include The Willing Suspension of Disbelief: Poetic Faith in Film (Lexington Press, due out 2007) and Irving Thalberg: Stealth Producer. He teaches courses in media research and media and society.

| Laurie Fruth, Asst. Director, School of Journalism and Media Studies
(M.A, 1983, University of Nevada, Las Vegas)
Laurie is the general manager of UNLV TV and Assistant Director of the School. As a faculty member with the Hank Greenspun School of Journalism, she teaches classes in videotape editing and program development. She works with students and members of the campus community to produce original, innovative programming for two educational cable channels. She received an undergraduate degree in medical communication from The Ohio State University and a masters degree in mass communication from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Professor Hausch has 21 years experience in
the newspaper industry, including 11 years as managing editor
of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. She teaches advanced level
journalism courses and is the 1992 recipient of the Rita Deanin
Abbey Humanities Teacher of the Year Award at UNLV.

Kilker, Associate Professor
(Ph.D., 1999, Cornell University)
Dr. Kilker’s research focuses on the intersection of society and media technologies, and in particular key stages of their interaction from design to obsolescence. He teaches many of the School's emerging technology courses, as well as technology and society courses in the UNLV Honors College. Recent publications explore damage in digital media (in Visual Communication Quarterly), innovative methods for collaborative research (in Social Identities), a book chapter about analyzing workflows in web-based learning systems (in Cultures of Efficiency), and book reviews in Visual Communication Quarterly and Science Communication. He has received awards from the Broadcast Education Association, Management Communication Quarterly, and the Association for Educators in Journalism and Mass Communication. |

Gary
W. Larson, Assistant Professor, Undergraduate Coordinator
(Ph.D., 1997, University of Minnesota)
Dr. Larson teaches television production and
broadcast journalism for the Hank Greenspun School of Communication.
He has been teaching in these areas along with emerging technologies
and visual rhetoric for a number of years and has authored
national conference papers as well as two book chapters. Larson
received his M.A. in Mass Communication from North Dakota
State University in 1991 and his B.A. in Anthropology from
the University of Minnesota in 1976. His ongoing research
includes work on the rhetorical constructions of self and
community on the global Internet, and the social psychology
of a visually-mediated world. He received a Broadcast Education
Association research award in 2001. He
is a member of the National Communication Association and
the Southern States Communication Association. He notes that
he is not the person who draws "The Far Side" comic strip...but
fervently wishes he was! |

Lawrence J. Mullen, Professor

Dr. Mullen's areas of research interest and teaching include visual aesthetics and media and community. His recent book, Las Vegas: Media and Myth explores the impact the media have on the transient community of Las Vegas. His other published research has explored the phenomenon of visual communication in several setting including the nexus between community and visuality. His teaching focuses on visual studies, but has also explored media and reality and an experimental course on massively multi-player on-line games. |

John Naccarato, Associate Affiliate Professor
(M.A., 1990, Cleveland State University)
John Naccarato combines his years as a marketing communication executive with his university and community college teaching to "bridge the gap" between communication theory and day-to-day practice. He has written and spoken on his content analysis research of business-to-business advertising. His past teaching includes all levels of marketing, public relations, advertising, oral, business and speech communication courses. He currently teaches in the Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) sequence which covers advertising, public relations, promotion direct marketing and Interactive. His background is in the effective use of traditional and digital communication in the online and offline business economy. He has served as: Vice President, Brand Building for a global internet professional services company; Vice President-General Manager of the Interactive Division of an Integrated Marketing Communication agency; Director of Marketing for a business-to-business manufacturing company; Vice President and Account Supervisor for a traditional advertising agency; agency and client public relations executive. His experience includes: online marketing communication, web site strategy, digital brand building, online promotion, online/offline strategy integration, media strategy, advertising, public relations, direct marketing, and promotion. |

Susanna Hornig Priest, Professor
(Ph.D., 1989, University of Washington)
Dr. Priest’s research and teaching focus on communicating science, technology, environment and health; public perception of issues and public opinion formation, especially for these areas; mass media’s changing role in society; media theory and research methods. She currently edits the academic journal Science Communication (published by Sage) and is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, as well as an active member of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. She has published dozens of articles and book chapters related to her research and is the author or editor of three books in mass communication studies: Communication Impact: Designing Research that Matters (Rowman and Littlefield, 2005); A Grain of Truth: The Media, the Public, and Biotechnology (Rowman and Littlefield, 2000); and Doing Media Research: An Introduction (Sage, 1995; second edition forthcoming 2008).

(M.A. Kansas State University)
David is the administrative manager of KUNV,
the jazz formatted radio station licensed to UNLV. As an affiliate
faculty member in the Hank Greenspun School of Journalism
& Media Studies, David teaches classes centered on various
aspects of radio broadcasting. Prior to his academic positions,
he worked in programming, sales, and management at several
commercial radio stations in central and western New York.
David is author of numerous articles, encyclopedia entries,
and book reviews on radio broadcasting and, with Dr. Mary
Beadle and Dr. Alan Stephenson (John Carroll University),
is the author of Broadcast Announcing Worktext, 3nd Edition. He has also authored Audio Production
Worktext (both texts published by Focal Press) with Dr. Lynne
S. Gross (California State University, Fullerton), 6th edition.

Broadrick Sohn, Director & Professor

Dr. Sohn became director of the Hank Greenspun
School of Journalism & Media Studies July 1st, 2005. She
has been a Fulbright Scholar and is the author or co-author
of several books including a widely used media management
case book in its fourth edition. She teaches mass communication
theory and methodology, media management, media ethics, and
news editorial courses and is interested in emerging and converging
media management research. She is on the editorial boards
of several scholarly publications including Journalism
and Mass Communication Quarterly.

Daniel A. Stout, Professor
(Ph.D.,1993, Rutgers University)
Dan Stout's research interests are in audience analysis and particularly the interface between media and religion. His books with Judith Buddenbaum, Religion and Mass Media: Audiences and Adaptations (Sage) and Religion and Popular Culture: Studies on the Interaction of Worldviews (Iowa State University Press) are considered foundational works in the field. He is also founding co-editor of the Journal of Media and Religion (Erlbaum) as well as the recent Encyclopedia of Religion, Communication, and Media (Routledge). Professor Stout has authored numerous journal articles and book chapters. He also teaches advertising and was Manager of Special Advertising Projects at the Houston Chronicle as well as Head of the Advertising Division of the Association of Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). |

Paul
J. Traudt, Associate Professor
(Ph.D., 1981, University of Texas at Austin)
Dr. Traudt is an Associate Professor of Media Studies who teaches, writes, and has consulted in the area of electronic media and audience processes and effects for over 30 years. He has published and conducted research across the spectrum of television and radio, including the use of evolving technologies by cable television viewers, longitudinal field studies of families and television, analyses of financial supporters for public broadcasting, and cultural assimilation and pluralism related to ethnic media. His traditional and online teaching interests include courses in mass media and society, video criticism, audience research methods, and global media. Some of his recent research activity has resulted in publications and conference presentations on Chicano film and on predictors of student success in web-course education platforms. He is the author of Media, Audiences, Effects: An Introduction to the Study of Media Content and Audience Analysis published by Allyn and Bacon in 2005. Before joining UNLV in 1996, Dr. Traudt worked at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, the University of New Mexico, and the University of Iowa. He has served as a guest professor at California State University - Chico, as an international professor with USAC (United Studies Abroad Consortium), and as a guest professor at the Institut fur Angewandte Medienforschung (Institute for Applied Media Research), Universität Lüneburg, in Germany. Dr. Traudt was born and raised in Denver, Colorado, went to school in Boulder at the University of Colorado for his B.A. and received his M.A. at Utah in Salt Lake City. In his spare time he enjoys international travel, reading American Civil War and WWII histories, bicycling, hiking, and fly-fishing for the elusive trout. |
