STAFF NEWS

(UPDATED 22 April 2009)

22 April 2009
  • TIME SHEETS DUE TOMORROW!
  • I hope to have summer contracts ready for signature next week. Bassam and Ivy need to see Laura and fill out a new I-9.
8 April 2009
  • I hope everyone is enjoying their Spring Break!
  • When you come back on Monday you will notice a minor change in the LRC. I removed the electrical cord and old computer under the staff counter. The Fire Marshall didn't like it. It only took him 4 years :-)
  • The summer schedule is available. A little background info: There are a total of 936 hours that can be worked over the summer. This comes to 156 hours per staff member. I really tried to balance the hours and still meet your class schedules and time off requests. Everyone got 156 except Elena (154) and Ivy (158). You are free to exchange hours just let me know.
  • HAPPY EASTER!!
31 March 2009
  • Tomorrow is the day to submit your summer preferences/schedule. Ivy already talked to me about her situation; so Ivy as soon as possible, please.
  • Ivy and Bassam: You will need new letters to be able to work this summer. Please get the requests in as soon as possible.
  • Vicki would like for the following two students to be logged in as guests. They will receive their Rebel cards in May for Summer Session I. Krittika Vathanavisuth and Yuwadee Phrutichai. When they come into the lab, please log them in but don't give them the guest account.
2 March 2009
  • You may log students from Nevada State College and the College of Southern Nevada in as guests. In this time of budget crisis we will support these institutions. Check to see if they have a valid Student ID from one of those institutions before you log them in.
  • Wednesday morning Marina will be using 15 computers for her final. Next Monday evening Iria Gonzalez will be bringing in her class. Both of these events are posted on the calendar in the LRC and on the LRC web site.
24 February 2009
  • Pay day is tomorrow. Check out the memo from payroll.
  • Please let me know when you would like to work this summer by 1 April.. Everyone should get one session off.
  • Fall monthly LRC classroom schedules were updated today.
  • It has come to my attention that some staff members are showing up late or not at all. When you are scheduled you are expected to be there and on time. If this trend continues, I will take action. Please reread the Staff Handbook if you have any questions about your responsibilities.
11 February 2009
  • Japanese Genki CDs for Lessons 5 and 6 are now in the LRC.
5 February 2009
  • It has come to my attention that some of the staff that is closing the LRC is not picking up garbage and getting the LRC ready for the next day. This is not a time consuming activity so please make sure the lab is in good shape before you leave.
  • Time sheets are due on Monday. Payday is Tuesday.
  • Please remember that you are there to help our students. I've noticed that some of you have been engrossed in your homework, etc. and rely on your counterpart to do all the work. Hopefully this is not a problem and are just my snapshot observations.
28 January 2009
  • I received my W2 in the mail today so you should be on the lookout for yours. This is an important document that you will need to file your taxes. If you have not received yours in about a week contact Payroll to see if it has been returned to them and then you will have to walk over to the Campus Service Building (T&M parking lot) to pick it up.
13 January 2009
  • Welcome Back! Hope everyone had a nice vacation.
  • As you all know we are now giving the French Placement exam. I volunteered to grade them but MN Olivier said she would do them. Once we take the scantrons upstairs they are out of our hands. Students who want to know how long it will be before they know the results will have to see someone in the French office.
  • Wednesdays we will have a class at 4 PM that uses the computers in the classroom. Please turn on power strips before the class starts and then turn them off once the class is finished.
  • Let's have a great semester both in the LRC and in your own personal classes.
24 November 2008
  • Hope everyone had a good day and you didn't miss me.
  • Ivy, thanks for your schedule and work permit letter.
  • Happy Thanksgiving to all!
19 November 2008
  • Ivy and Bassam: Please let me know when you have submitted your work permit request.
  • Don't forget that the TV/VCR needs to be delivered today at 2:30.
  • I have Fabiola's and Trina's Spring 09 schedules. If you haven't sent me a copy, please do as soon as possible. I would like to have the Spring schedule finalized before you head off for Winter Break.
  • Please annotate on the final's schedule posted in the LRC which final period you can cover. Thanks to Ivy and Trina for already volunteering for a period each.
  • I am working on a project for Dr. Bellver today and will be working from home.
12 November 2008
  • Mary Ashcraft is having her students record their voices online. If any of her students forget the instructions, they are located here.
  • Ivy and Bassam please get your Campus Work Permit letter for the Spring Semester as soon as possible. See the following link for a copy of the request: Work Permit.pdf
  • Please give me your Spring class schedule as soon as possible. Also, include times that you would like to have off.
  • Trina, please make signs that state that the LRC will be closed on 20 Nov from 10:00 to 13:00. Marina will be using 25 computers for an essay exam.
  • A copy of the LRC Finals Schedule is available from the link on the main LRC page. Please sign up for one time period. Only one staff member needs to be present. LRC will be opened no later than15 min prior to exam. Once everyone is finished you may close up the LRC but you will be paid for the entire scheduled period.
  • We are looking at having a holiday luncheon sometime in December. Please get together and set a date, time and place.
  • I will be on leave from 22 Nov-8 Dec. The week in December I will be in Philadelphia.
4 November 2008
  • Time sheets are due Friday 7 Nov. Don't forget! Payday is Monday! :-)
  • LRC logs are looking better. Thanks!
  • The following link will take you to the letter that I sent out to faculty this morning:
    End of Semester Letter
  • I will be out of the office 10-11 November. I will have Theresa bring down the checks/pay statements to the LRC.
21 October 2008
  • Time sheets are due Thursday 23 Oct. Don't forget! Payday is Friday! :-)
  • Remember the LRC log needs to be filled out daily. Each day should have as a minimum the LRC opening time and the LRC closing time.
  • I found computer 5 to be non-operational but there was no mention of it in the log. Please keep track off all problems.
  • Don't just list the problem but also note any action that you took. Noting that students and faculty were eating/drinking in the classroom is fine but also annotate what actions you took. If you talked to the instructor and they ignored you, then I will take some kind of action.
7 October 2008
  • Time sheets are due Thursday 9 Oct. Don't forget! Payday is Friday! :-)
  • Reminder: I will be gone all next week. I will be in Pittsburgh so I will be out of touch. While I am gone, Trina will be in charge. She has decision making authority while I am gone. Any questions should be addressed to her.
  • Trina or Diana will need to open the LRC at 0815 next Tue and Trina or Elena next Thu for Marina's class. Don't forget to setup doc-cam.
  • I will be having a meeting in the LRC on 11 Oct so there will be garbage in the garbage can when you open the lab on Monday morning. Don't get excited!
  • I added a new item on the lab schedule. Dr. Jara will bring in her SPA 760 class on Monday 13 Oct to use Audacity on 6 computers. I will install the software on all machines tomorrow.
  • I put a pay classification memo in the LRC. You can check it out to see what your job should be based upon how much you make.
30 September 2008
  • Please make all notes that pertain to the operations in the LRC on the Daily Log. Don't put them on post-it notes.
  • A student in Marina's T/Th 0830 class left her Focus on Grammar Book 3 in the classroom. Did anyone find it?
  • When I was in the LRC today some of you were working very hard on your homework. Don't be distracted! Homework is fine but don't become so absorbed that you don't see what is going on in the LRC. Don't forget that you should walk around periodically to see what the students are doing. Also place chairs and headphones where they belong.
  • Judy Marks will start a new ESL class at 2:30 on 6 Oct. She wants the document camera. After ESL155 on Mon. & Wed. Bring the doc-camera and stand back to the staff area. No need to put it away until after Ms. Marks class at 3:30 pm.
25 September 2008
  • I will be out of the office until 30 September.
  • I found a note on a CD this morning that said it was scratched. In the future, please find out the exact problem (i.e. track 8 skips) so when I clean or repair the CD, I will know what to check so I can see if I solved the problem.
  • Reminder: No DVD/Videos should be stored on the counter. There were some problems that certain media could not be found when a faculty member was looking for it. Please replace the media back in the drawers IMMEDIATELY after use.
  • Don't forget that SPA760 will need 6 computers reserved for Monday at 1600 hrs.
  • Thanks for all your hard work and have a nice weekend!
16 September 2008
  • Jessica Cline is bringing her class to the LRC on Thursday at 10am. She will need 12 computers. Please reserve the machines.
15 September 2008
  • The new policy is in the lab information book. If you did not attend the meeting on Friday, please look it over because there are some minor changes that I made last week.
  • The emergency phone roster in the lab information book has also been updated. Please check your number to make sure it is correct.
  • The document camera needs to be put away immediately after the last class that uses it. That should be around 1130 on Monday & Wednesday and 1430 on Tuesday and Thursday.
  • Jessica Cline will be using 12 computers on Thursday 18 Sep from 1000 until 1045 hrs. Please make sure they are reserved. The lab will not close for this class.
9 September 2008
  • There is an older German couple that is authorized to use the LRC but do not have Novell accounts. They speak very little English. If they stop by, please log them in using the guest account. They are using Rosetta Stone. (English)
  • There was a question this morning about when to check this site. I will update this page in the afternoon so if you want to know what is going on, check it out in the evening. Anything that is urgent will be passed directly to whomever it concerns and this page will be used as confirmation so that you don't forget.
  • There has been a lot of information so far but as we get further into the semester the flood of information will slow to a trickle.
  • I still haven't heard from anyone about topics to cover on Friday.
8 September 2008
  • Two copies of the track listings for the Japanese 113 CDs are now in the LRC. These CDs are for JPN 113. JPN 114 and JPN 214 are still using Yookoso and their workbooks are online at the publisher's web site.
