President's Message
There has been a great deal of speculation about the budget. Many issues remain unresolved and will likely continue that way through the next regular legislative session, which will begin in February of 2009 and end in June of 2009. We may not know our final budget situation for the next biennium (July 2009 through June 2011) until the close of this legislative session.
UNLV is not alone in the current economic climate, as many public universities around the country are facing comparable budget cuts. Be assured that I, along with key university leaders, am working with the chancellor and with state legislators on a daily basis. They hear and understand our concerns. We are communicating the tremendous impact the university has on our region, our state and our economy. We are emphasizing our irreplaceable role in preparing a strong work force for Nevada and how our research positively affects the state's businesses and agencies, and improves the quality of life for the citizens of our state. For example, a recently completed study by the UNLV Center for Business and Economic Research estimates that each $1 of state support for UNLV yields $4.50 of economic activity for the state. And, as a growing and thriving community, Southern Nevada is vitally dependent on the educated work force UNLV produces.
As we make decisions regarding budget reductions, we will maintain our commitment to both student learning and research excellence. In particular, we will be unrelenting in advancing our research mission. Despite budget reductions, it is critical that we use our recently completed strategic plan to define our own future through that shared community vision.
Finally, and most importantly, we will continue to seek your input and support as we navigate these difficult waters in the months to come. The Faculty Senate and the newly established President's Advisory Council will be regularly consulted on options and strategies, but we will also use additional opportunities such as campus meetings to directly solicit your feedback and address your concerns. We will endeavor to keep you fully informed and involved as we develop our budget solutions.
David B. Ashley
