Budget Updates

Message from President Smatresk Regarding the Budget

Sent via UNLV Official on Jan. 25, 2010

Dear Colleagues,

As you may know, the Nevada Economic Forum called into special session by Governor Gibbons met Friday to discuss the reduced revenue projections facing our state. Members of the forum estimate that revenues over the current biennium will be down by almost 11 percent or approximately $580 million. This figure does not include fixed costs associated with the budget which could increase the shortfall to as much as $800 million.

Please know that I am working closely with legislative leaders, our Board of Regents and NSHE leadership to determine what the revenue shortfall will mean to the system and to UNLV.

While I am deeply concerned with these new numbers, I remain confident in the unprecedented collaboration within NSHE leadership, my fellow presidents, our Faculty Senate, the cabinet and our undergraduate and graduate student leaders who have all come together to help maintain the highest-quality education for UNLV students. Together, we are developing strategic plans to address the budget challenges. I am also incredibly proud of the faculty, staff and students of UNLV for pulling together in these difficult times and continuing to work hard to achieve our vision for the future.

Updates will continue to be posted to the UNLV budget website, and I will continue to communicate with you as we gain more information about the revenue shortfall and we finalize our strategic plans.

Cordially,

Neal J. Smatresk President
