Students' Service Stands Out
While students wait to see who makes the spring Dean's List, UNLV is busy enjoying its own kudos. UNLV earned a spot on the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service efforts and service to disadvantaged youth.

The recognition from the Corporation for National and Community Service is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. Selection factors include scope and innovativeness of service projects, percentage of students participating in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service learning courses. Its first appearance on the list, UNLV shares the highest honor with five other schools. In total, 528 schools were recognized.

UNLV students rack up an impressive 5,000 service hours annually. Students log hours participating in everything from Circle K International and Rebel Service Council to faith-based activities, blood drives, and Meals on Wheels.

In congratulating the winners, U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings said, "Americans rely on our higher-education system to prepare students for citizenship and the work force. We look to institutions like these to provide leadership in partnering with local schools to shape the civic, democratic, and economic future of our country."
