Message From the Director
Why is it that students skip the word priority and go straight to the word deadline?
I remember when I started working at UNLV 10 years ago, the priority application deadline was July 1. At that time, however, students would have through the first week of classes to make that last-ditch attempt to get into the university. Over my tenure at UNLV, I have participated in hundreds of conversations about application deadlines -- what they mean, how the deadline will impact enrollment, what a "good" deadline is, etc. For the past several years, we have gently settled on February 1 as the priority application deadline; however, the questions about what this actually means still abound.
The February 1 priority deadline is meant to encourage students to start thinking about their future and ensure their college application process is meaningful by applying early. This gives the student an opportunity to pick a school that is a good fit versus picking a school that will let him or her in at the time. The priority deadline at UNLV comes with some assurances that the application will be processed before school starts, and in most cases, if the application is complete (all official transcripts and fees received), it will be processed before registration.
As you might imagine, there are students who, despite our best efforts and for a variety of reasons, miss the priority application deadline. Many times, these students call frantically with a lengthy explanation as to why they missed the priority deadline. At UNLV, the priority application deadline is just that -- a priority. Students interested in applying to UNLV after the deadline are definitely able and encouraged to do so. The admission application is available online and in paper format throughout the summer months.
Whether it is by our priority deadline or in the middle of the summer, all students interested are encouraged to apply to UNLV. Thanks for all you do to assist your students with the application process. It is only with your support that we are successful in recruiting the best and brightest students to UNLV.
Yours in education,
Kristi Rodriguez
