
UNLV held its first University Day celebration in 1958 to boost campus morale by involving the Las Vegas community. The annual weekend event featured races; enormous bonfires; and greased pig, egg-throwing, and tug-of-war contests; also included participation of local politicians.
The tradition, brought back in 2007 to mark UNLV’s 50th anniversary, will once again kick off the school year and celebrate the university’s founding. Events are scheduled from Sept. 15 to 27:
