Use of the Endstation by Non-Team Members
The original idea was put forth to develop the endstation as an experimental resource for the community of scientists
in the field of atomic and molecular research with x-ray synchrotron radiation. With the expectation that other
users, perhaps with other experimental techniques, would make use of the endstation, the team designed it with
maximum flexibility. Although team members naturally have primary access to the endstation, based on their contributions
to its development, it will be made available to non-team researchers for use at the ALS upon request. The procedure
for outside-user access to the endstation is straightforward. For outside users unfamiliar with endstation operation,
use is expected to be via collaboration with a team member. An interested outside user first contacts the team
leader, Dr. Dennis W. Lindle,
to discuss the proposed experiment. The user then is paired with a team member, by mutual consent, for detailed
planning of the experiment.
Once an outside user has obtained experience with the endstation, then independently operation of the endstation
will be possible. The procedures for this mode of operation are under development, but are planned to be handled
in a manner similar to the outside-user process at the ALS and other SR facilities, although somewhat more informally.
Ultimately, we would expect an especially active outside user to become part of the team and thus share in both
its use and maintenance.
