Jim Wilson received his Ph. D. in
1967 in mathematics education from Stanford
University. He worked with the School Mathematics Study
Group from 1964 – 1968. In 1969, he
began a long tenure as department head and graduate coordinator for mathematics
education at the University
of Georgia.
Among other topics, Dr. Wilson is
interested in visualization, evaluation and assessment. He has served as major professor for over 50
doctoral students.
Dr. Wilson has placed extensive
resources for mathematics education on the Internet. Some of his websites receive over 35,000 hits
per week.
Dr. Wilson served as a visiting
faculty member at seven institutions over the course of his career. He gave special lectures in several
countries, including China, Japan, Thailand,
and Sweden.
As a consultant, Dr. Wilson has
served not only numerous counties in Georgia
and numerous states in the United
States, but also the Educational Testing Services
and the National Assessment of Educational Progress.
Dr. Wilson has been a reviewer or
editor for many journals, including American
Educational Research Journal, International
Journal of Science and Mathematics Education, and Journal for Research in Mathematics Education. He also has been a reviewer for many
publishing companies and has served on the author team for three textbook
series.
The American Educational Research
Association special interest group for research in mathematics education was
founded by Dr. Wilson.
In 2001, the National
Council of Teachers of Mathematics awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award to
Dr. Wilson.
Georgians are proud of the
accomplishments of Dr. Jim Wilson and are
pleased that he accepted the invitation to be the keynote speaker for RCML at Berry College on March
6, 2009.
Dr. Thad Starner

Dr. Thad Starner is an Assistant
Professor in Georgia Tech’s College
of Computing. He holds four degrees from MIT.
Dr. Starner is founder and director
of the Contextual Computing Group at Georgia Institute of Technology. Before joining the Georgia Tech faculty in
1999, Starner gained international recognition at the MIT Media Laboratory as
one of the world’s leading experts on wearable computers during his doctoral
work.
An advocate of continuous-access,
everyday-use systems, Dr. Starner has worn his custom wearable computer in such
a manner since 1993. He is a co-founded
of the IEEE International Symposium on Wearable Computers and co-founded and
first member of the MIT Wearable Computing Project.
Thad has been named as one of
Technology Review’s 100 individuals under 35 who exemplify the spirit of
innovation. He has been a keynote
speaker or distinguished lecturer at a wide range of scientific, industrial,
and academic events, including ACM’s Conference for Advances in Computer
Entertainment, Princeton’s Distinguished Lecture in Pervasive Computing, and
the International Conference on Robotics and Automation.
His work has been discussed in
national and international forums, including CBS’s 60 minutes, The New York
Times, ABC’s Nightline, World News Tonight with Peter Jennings, CNN, and The
Wall Street Journal. Starner has also
demonstrated his ideas to numerous industries.
He has authored over 100 scientific papers.
Dr. Starner created one of the
earliest high-accuracy on-line cursive handwriting recognition systems. He developed a gloveless, real-time sign
language recognizer. Recent work has included
assistive technology for the deaf community.

in store for them when Dr. Starner delivers the Wilson Lecture on March 5,
2009.
