2006 Tentative Conference Program

UNLV will be hosting the 33rd annual meeting of the Research Council on Mathematics Learning at the International Gaming Institute on the UNLV campus on February 23-25, 2006.  RCML seeks to stimulate, generate, coordinate, and disseminate research efforts designed to identify, understand, and affect factors that influence mathematics learning.  Our conferences are small, with a typical attendance between 100 and 150, which allows for both formal and informal interactions.  The registration fee will run from $125 to $165 and includes several food and social functions.  Fulltime graduate students may register for $50 and have access to all the food and social activities.

The conference will begin with a reception to be held at the Mirage Hotel on Thursday afternoon.  We will then enjoy the Dolphin Habitat, a center involved in dolphin research housed at the Mirage.  Don't expect to see a show such as those at Sea World.  This is definitely a research complex.  Are dolphins capable of transfer of learning?  Can they "peer" tutor?  We will have the opportunity to hear from, and interact with, a represenative of the habitat research team.

Our keynote speaker on Friday will be Skip Fennell, president-elect of NCTM.  Long-time members of RCML will remember Skip from the early days of RCDPM and RCML.  He will speak on "What it REALLY means to be a highly qualified teacher."

The remainder of the program on Friday and Saturday will consist of small group discussion and presentations lasting approximately 50 minutes each.  There will be approximately eight-nine sessions per hour to choose from.  All speakers have been notified about the status of their proposals. If you have not been contacted, please email Jeff Shih at jshih@unlv.nevada.edu

The host hotel will be the AmerSuites Hotel located at 4520 Paradise Road (702-369-3366). This property is on the western border of the UNLV campus (and just across the street from the Hard Rock Hotel).
