Lotus Notes, UNLV’s e-mail program for employees, is being upgraded to Lotus Notes 8.5, for both PCs and Macs.
Over the summer, OIT piloted the upgrade with about 20 percent of current Lotus Notes users. We hope to get the rest of the campus upgraded by the end of the fall semester.
Why? The upgrade offers: • Enhanced user interface features • Better efficiency on the servers • Improved web access • More control over preferences and views • Added components such as RSS feeds • Enhanced instant messaging
When? • Starting October 5 • Domino 1 users will be upgraded first, then Domino 2 users, etc. • The upgrade process will be spread out over a seven-week period
How? • When it’s your turn to upgrade, you will receive an e-mail with detailed information. • For Windows PC users, the day after you receive the e-mail, Lotus Notes will prompt you to upgrade automatically. You will be given the option to accept it or delay it. • Upon accepting the automatic upgrade, the installation will complete itself. Lotus Notes will close, upgrade itself, and reopen when it’s finished. Be patient, it can take 30-40 minutes to finish upgrading and during that time it looks like nothing is happening since it installs in the background without showing a status bar. • Mac users will all be manually upgraded. You may download and install the software yourself or have an OIT technician assist you. Manual install instructions will be included in the e-mails when it is your turn, or you can contact the Help Desk to get the instructions now.
If you use WebMail (Lotus Notes web access) exclusively, you do not have to upgrade your Lotus Notes client software. Simply send an e-mail to templateupgraderequests@unlv.edu to start using the upgraded features on the web.
Please refer to the OIT webpage http://oit.unlv.edu/email-and-collaboration/lotus-notes-upgrade-information for additional information. This page contains the full upgrade schedule, instructions for manual installations, tips, and more.
If you have questions about the upgrade, please contact the IT Help Desk at 895-0777 or IThelp@unlv.edu.
