Masters
Program in History
The History Department's Master's program, one of the oldest
graduate programs at UNLV, aims to broaden and to deepen critical
understanding of the whole heritage of human experience. It is
also designed to sharpen scholarly skills and develop a degree
of specialized expertise in fields drawn from the histories of
Asia, Europe, Latin America and the United States as well as public
history. The program strikes a balance between teaching and research,
familiarizing students with research methods, traditional and contemporary
interpretations of history, and a variety of approaches to historical
problems.
The Master's program qualifies graduates for admission to doctoral
and other post-graduate programs, such as law school. It also fulfills
requirements for advancing in secondary school teaching and prepares
graduates for jobs with historical societies, museums and other
public and private institutions with historical interests. Moreover,
individuals with an M.A. in History have skills well suited for
positions in business, government and international corporations.
Students in the M.A. program develop mastery in a number of related
geographical, chronological and/or topical fields through coursework
and independent reading. Courses are a mixture of colloquia (courses
devoted to mastering the historical literature in particular fields)
and seminars (courses dedicated to research and writing) along
with courses in historiography (the literature of history), historical
methods and independent study. Competence is demonstrated on a
set of rigorous examinations based on substantial bibliographies
covering the historical literature in particular fields. Students
have a choice of fulfilling the requirements for the degree either
by writing a Master's thesis (thesis track) or by taking extra
courses (non-thesis track).
Seventy students are currently enrolled in the M.A. program.
Students in the Master's program may avail themselves of graduate
assistantships and opportunities for part-time teaching in the
University and Community College System of Nevada on a competitive
basis.
