The Graduate Certificate in Public Management is designed to: 1) Provide students with the intellectual foundation to become a public manager; 2) Provide currently employed individuals a means to demonstrate to their agency that are they undertaking and have achieved individual staff development; 3) Encourage students to further their academic degree with a Master in Public Administration.
Admissions
The Certificate Program begins once a year in the Spring Semester. Prospective students must be employed with city, county, state, or federal government offices to qualify for the Certificate Program. The deadline for admission application materials is Nov 15th. All courses are held in the Clark County Government Center or at City Hall, in the downtown area. There are two courses required during the Spring and Fall semesters, and they are held from 5:30pm to 8:20pm, Tuesday and Thursday nights. The Summer semester requires 3 one-credit course electives, PUA 792, held either in the evening or on Saturdays. As it currently is configured, admissions into the certificate program is only permitted if a student enters a cohort that is being sponsored by a government agency.
Application Process:
1. Apply at the Graduate School and pay Application fee. ($60) This is done online at the Graduate College’s website, http://graduatecollege.unlv.edu/admissions/
2. Official transcripts, two letters of reference, and a current resume sent to the Public Administration department. The Graduate School also requires official transcripts for all college level work sent directly to them.
3. After Departmental and Graduate School obligations have been met, the file then goes to the Admissions Committee. The Graduate School will then send a letter to the applicant with the status of the admission decision.
4. Must complete the required 15 credits with a 3.5 gpa, then able to apply for the MPA program without taking the GRE the following Spring. The final project for the Certificate is a capstone or examination in the Fall semester.
