Whether pursuing a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree, students in the College of Sciences work closely with the faculty to discover the world around them. These relationships are developed in the classroom and nurtured through hands-on research and community service.
Hands-on Research
The research opportunities available to our students and faculty allow them to make inquiries and observations necessary for scientific discoveries. More importantly, these discoveries are helping to protect and preserve Nevada and its citizens. Examples include geological and biosciences studies in Nevada and other arid lands, hydrogen fuel, experiments, high-pressure physics and chemistry studies, and advanced nuclear energy research. Students recently joined associate professor Brenda Buck's research efforts in the Atacama Desert of Chile and, closer to home, students are exploring the Southern Nevada landscape, examining everything from microbial life forms to the fossils of ancient dinosaurs.
Community Service
Community service is also an integral part of the college. One example of students building relationships with the community is the college's Bone Marrow Donor Program. The program, initiated by a science student, allows students to sign up for the national registry that matches donors and recipients for this life-saving procedure.
Access to Great Facilities
Students studying in the college have access to facilities, laboratories, research centers, and institutes on campus and throughout the country. This access enhances the classroom experience, fosters educational development, and builds relationships within the scientific community.
Prepared for Life
The college offers programs in biological sciences, chemistry, geoscience, mathematical sciences, physics, and water management. It also offers guidance for students seeking professional careers in the medical, dental, chiropractic, and pharmaceutical fields.
The student-faculty relationship, hands-on research, and community service help ensure that students who graduate from the College of Sciences are prepared for whatever path they choose.
