Graduate Application Guidelines



M. S. Program

The M.S. program in Mathematical Sciences at the University of Nevada Las Vegas has four areas of concentration:

    1. Pure Mathematics
    2. Applied Mathematics
    3. Applied Statistics
    4. Teaching Mathematics

1. Admission Requirements

Applicants must satisfy the admission requirements of the Graduate College. In addition to the Graduate College admission requirements, admission to the M.S. Program in Mathematical Sciences requires that an applicant must have

A.     At least 18 credit hours of upper level math courses beyond calculus.

B.     At least 2.75/4.00 undergraduate GPA.

C.     For the international applicant whose country’s official language is not English, the TOEFL with a score of at least 79 for the IBT, 213 for the computer test, or 550 for the paper test.

2. Admission Procedure

To apply for admission to the M.S. Program, an applicant must submit application material to both the Graduate College and the Department of Mathematical Sciences.

To the Graduate College, the applicant must submit the following materials to: Graduate College, University of Nevada Las Vegas, 4505 Maryland Parkway, Box 451017, Las Vegas, NV 89154-1017, USA.

1.      The official TOEFL scores, if the official language of your country is not English.

2.      The Online Application for Admission, http://graduatecollege.unlv.edu/prospective/

3.      The official transcripts from all colleges and universities you have attended.

4.      Registration fee.

To the Department, the applicant must submit the following materials to: Graduate Coordinator, Department of Mathematical Sciences, University of Nevada Las Vegas, 4505 Maryland Parkway, Las Vegas, NV 89154-4020, USA.

    1. A copy of transcripts that were sent to the Graduate College.

    2. At least two letters of recommendation from persons familiar with your academic record and potential for advanced study in the mathematical sciences.
       
    3. The Application for Graduate Assistantship (if applicable), download the Graduate Assistantship Application Form.

    4. A statement of purpose. Please state your purpose in applying for graduate study, your particular area of specialization within the mathematical sciences (if known), and any additional information that may aid the selection committee in evaluating your preparation and your aptitude for graduate study at UNLV.

3. Deadlines.

The Graduate College and the Department of Mathematical Sciences must receive all application materials from applicants by February 1 for fall admission, and October 1 for spring admission.

 

Ph.D. Program

The Ph.D. program in Mathematical Sciences at the University of Nevada Las Vegas has four areas of concentration:

    1. Pure Mathematics
    2. Applied Mathematics
    3. Computational Mathematics
    4. Statistics

Admission Requirements

Applicants must satisfy the admission requirements of the Graduate College. In addition to the Graduate College admission requirements, admission to the Ph.D. Program in Mathematical Sciences requires that an applicant must have

1.      For an applicant with a MS degree, at least 3.00/4.00 graduate GPA, and 15 credit hours of graduate level math courses with grade B or above.

2.      For an applicant without a MS degree, at least 3.00/4.00 undergraduate GPA or at least 3.25/4.00 undergraduate GPA of the last two years of mathematics work.

3.      The GRE General Test with a score of at least 700 in the quantitative part, and at least 1100 in the verbal and quantitative parts.
 

4.      For the international applicant whose country’s official language is not English, the TOEFL with a score of at least 79 for the IBT, 213 for the computer test, or 550 for the paper test.
