Professional Background

Dr. Lledo participated as an inorganic geochemist in Expedition 309 of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP), which in conjunction with Expeditions 206 and 312 succesfully drilled (for the first time in the history of the drilling program) a complete section of the oceanic crust.

His Ph.D. degree at Binghamton University (SUNY), was under Dr. H. Richard Naslund's and Dr. David Jenkins' advise. His research topic was a study of the origin of Chilean iron deposits, and involved field mapping, sample petrography, whole-rock and mineral analysis and experimental studies on the effects of phosphorous and volatiles (H2O, S, F, Cl, and B) in producing magma immiscibility in andesitic rocks and experimental work on the thermal-stability of actinolite.

For his Master's thesis his research topic involved the study of the origin of magmatic Fe and hydrothermal Fe-Cu-Au deposits in the Chilean Andes. After completing his master’s degree he worked for the Geological Survey of Chile and gained experience in a broad range of ore deposits and igneous rocks.

Research

Doctor Lledo's current research examines the origin of the Mid-Miocene gold mineralization of the Searchlight mining district, and its relationship with the Searchlight Pluton (Nevada). The Searchlight Pluton and the overlying volcanic rocks are tilted to the west in almost 90 degrees which constitute a rare opportunity to study the Pluton in depth and its relationship with the gold mineralization. The study involves mapping, petrography, geochemistry, fluid inclusions studies, and geochronology.

His interests also include experimental research, specifically related to the effects of phosphorous and other volatiles in magmas; experimental studies on the thermal stability of actinolite and its changes in geochemical composition at different conditions; and the chemical variations of the oceanic crust.
