Current Students

Aaron Bell: Aaron's Ph.D. involves two major projects: 1) performing an    experimental study of platinum group element, base metal sulfide and gold    fractionation in mafic layered intrusions; and 2) quantifying the diffusion of    Pt and Rh in basalt melts. These project involve experiments (at UNLV),    analysis of experimental run products (at UNLV and ETH, Zurich, Switzerland    in collaboration with Chris Heinrich), numerical modeling (at Duke U. in    collaboration with Alan Boudreau) and synthesis of glasses (at Don    Dingwell's lab in Munich).

Steve Maglio: Steve's Ph.D. focuses on the chemical processes attending    pro-grade metamorphism of downgoing ocean plates in arc collisional    environments. He is performing experiments using a hydrothermal diamond    anvil cell (HDAC) to simulate conditions between 2 and 5 GPa and    temperatures between 400 and 800 degreees C and by using in-situ white    light at the Advance Photon Source (APS, Chicago, IL), he aims to quantify    chemical partitioning at slab-mantle wedge conditions. His results will be    used to develop a quantitative model of the mass transfer of elements from    the slab during both dewatering and partial melting and how these two    fluids modify the overlying mantle wedge and continental crust. Ultimately,    we want to better our understanding of this mass transfer to facilitate more    accurate models for volcanic activity on Earth's surface.

Kelly Robertson: Kelly's Ph.D. focuses on the link between shallow-level    magmatism, geothermal energy and epithermal ore mineralization. She is    quantifying the composition of melt and fluid inclusions in lavas from the    most recent caldera-forming event of the Mutnovsky Volcano, Kamchatka,    Russia which has been active since the middle Pleistocene with the most    recent eruption in 2000. Kelly will use the melt and fluid inclusions to    describe the progressive changes in fluid chemistry during punctuated    differentiation of the magmatic system as it has evolved during four caldera    forming events.

Brian Aillaud: Brian's MS thesis research is focused on constraining the    potential physical and chemical link between porphyry and epithermal    mineralization in the Maricunga Belt, Northern Chile. Epithermal deposits    have long been thought of as the near-surface extension of deeper    porphyry systems, but a clear and quantifed link remains elusive. Brian will    test this link by combining detailed petrography and fluid and melt    inclusions analysis. Fluid and melt inclusions are essentially time capsules    which preserve the composition of silicate and aqueous fluids which were    present during the formation of the ore deposits. The solute loads of these    inclusions will be quantified by using LA-ICPMS (in collaboration with Bob    Bodnar at VPI) and element ratios will be used to explore the possible link.    Brian is being co-advised by Dr. John Muntean at the University of Nevada    Reno.

• Nathan Eck: Nathan's MS thesis research will focus on the evolution of    Carlin-type gold deposits in Nevada. Nathan spent the summer of 2008    working at the Pinson Deposit in central Nevada. He was involved in drill    core logging and mapping the structural relationships in mineralization    hosted by fault gouge. Check back for more details as his project evolves.

• Zach Artz: Zach's M.S. thesis research is developing a lithogeochemistry    model to predict the location of Au ore bodies at the Cortez Gold Deposit.    This deposit is located on the famous Carlin Trend in central Nevada. Zach    is doing a combination of drill core logging, ICP analyses for trace and major    elements, petrography and XRD analyses to quantify mineral paragenesis    and statistical data reduction to identify vectors to ore.

Greg Zellner: Greg's M.S. thesis research focusses on a series of Au- and    Cu-bearing ore veins in central Arizona. The project involves detailed field    mapping to contrain the structural relationship between the veins and    surrounding rhyolite and basaltic rocks as well as greenschist-facies rocks.    Greg will combine petrography and XRD to constrain the paragenetic    sequence of mineralization, Ar-Ar dating of the extrusive rocks and well as    sericite in the ore veins and fluid inclusion analyses to determine the    chemistry of ore-depositing fluid.

Projects Available (Students Wanted!)

I currently have three Ph.D. and three M.S. students, and would like to work with even more graduate students. If you're interested in one of the projects below, or if you have a project in mind that involves experimental or field petrology, please e-mail me: adam.simon@unlv.edu

  1. M.S. or Ph.D. student wanted to experimentally constrain the diffusion of iron and chlorine in rhyolite magma.  The results will be used to model the control that iron exerts on shallow-level magma degassing.
  2. M.S. student wanted to work on degassing in felsic sills associated with Carlin-type gold mineralization. This project aims to use apatite and fluid inclusion chemistries to elucidate the potential relationship between magmatic vesiculation and gold mineralization.
