The program leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism and Media Studies is designed to prepare students to become thoughtful scholars and effective professionals in broadcast and print journalism, integrated marketing communication, advertising, public relations and media technologies. Areas of concentration include: broadcast journalism, print journalism, integrated marketing communication (IMC) and media studies.

Admission to the Major

The Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media studies is a highly competitive program and enrollment is limited. 

Students must complete the following pre-major requirements before they can be considered for entry into the program:

1. Journalism and Media Studies Core (9 credits):  JOUR 100, 101 and 102
2. UNLV General Education Core (16-18 credits):  ENG 101 and 102,

US Nevada and US Constitution requirement and six credits from the remaining general education core.

Students must receive at least a B in all journalism and media studies core classes.
A qualifying entrance exam will be administered once a semester to students who have completed (or are in the final semester prior to completion of) pre-major requirements.

Once a student has successfully completed all of the above requirements, he or she will be put in a pool of potential applicants. Subsequent interviews and reviews of records will determine if the student will be admitted as a major.

Note:  Students must be fully admitted to the minor before taking any upper-division classes.

Required Minor

Each student majoring in Journalism and Media studies must complete a minor in a field of his or her choice. Minors require 18-24 credits, depending on the program. A Liberal Arts minor is strongly encouraged and students should work closely with an advisor to select and complete a minor that will enhance a degree in Journalism and Media Studies.

Required Internship

Practical application of classroom experience through professional internships is mandatory for all majors admitted under the 2006-2008 catalog. Students must complete 12 credits of appropriate coursework prior to the internship and must a GPA or 3.0 or above. Students may complete up to three credits of internship but only one credit is required to fulfill degree requirements.

Academic Policies

Students must be Journalism and Media Studies majors during the completion of the last 30 credits taken at UNLV in fulfillment of the departmental residency requirement. Only coursework in the major for which a grade of C or above is earned will count toward satisfaction of the degree requirement. A 3.0 GPA is required to graduate from the program. Students must complete 42 upper-division credits: 27 of these credits must be in Journalism and Media Studies.

Advisement

Students are strongly encouraged to have all coursework for the Journalism and Media Studies major approved in consultation with an academic advisor in the Greenspun College of Urban Affairs Student Advising Center. Failure to seek academic advising may delay graduation.
